I am a masters-level qualified Social Worker and Family Therapist who has devoted my career to working with children and families in a clinical forensic capacity. Most of my work over the past 16+ years has been in the specialist field of sexual violence, working with victims/survivors across the lifespan, young people who have engaged in sexually harmful behaviour, and adult offenders serving parole and community-based orders.
I have also held leadership positions on social work and women’s health boards, and taught at university as both a lecturer (counselling) and tutor (social work). I have experience in setting up my own private practice and have also begun specialising in providing training packages and consultancy services to organisations that work with children and young people. I have consulted on issues related to child safety, including managing disclosures, understanding internal and external reporting obligations, and conducting investigative reviews of child safety incidents, policies, and procedures.
I am driven by the pursuit of social justice through the scientific study of a person within the context of their environment. This includes the broader context such as the historical, political, social, economic, cultural, and relational facets that make up the environment. I am particularly influenced by my post-graduate training in Clinical Family Therapy, which consolidated the systemic approach that allows me to often sit with multiple perspectives at any given time.
I am curious about the influence of family structures and understanding patterns of behaviour within the context of the current stage of the family life cycle. I consider the impact of generational legacy on people’s narratives around what family means to them. I am interested in the stories people tell about their lives and how meaning is created..
I also draw upon my tertiary study in psychology to examine the role of neuroscience in trauma and the importance of working with the body. I am particularly interested in the application of attachment theory and trauma theory when working with childhood abuse. I also utilise my undergraduate training in criminology to recognise the role of gender, power, and control in sexual violence crimes, apply findings from the latest social science research, and understand a person’s experience within the broader criminal justice system.
My clinical work with children and families has fuelled my passion for supporting parents to navigate raising their children when estranged from their own families, and to equip parents to understand how abuse or trauma (either their own or their child’s) is impacting their current parenting.
I respectfully acknowledge the Wadawurrung and Dja Dja Wurrung people of the Kulin Nation, who are the traditional owners of the land on which I live and work. I recognise their continued connection to country and community. I pay my respect to Elders past and present, and extend that same respect to all First Nations people everywhere.
